The Best Bargain Ever!
Image by {platinum}
Ok kids, here's the story of "My Best Bargain Ever..."
So I was back in Massachusetts a few summers ago visiting family and Bobbo and I had driven into Boston for the day. One of our favorite places to check out is the Garment District, a fantastic vintage clothing warehouse. Now this place has 2 floors, the top floor is where all the good stuff is - it's clean, neat, well organized, everything you might want in a vintage shop. But downstairs is where the real bargains are. Here they sell clothing by the pound - five pounds of clothes, five bucks! Sure, all the clothes are dumped in a giant pile on the dirty cement floor for people to just pick through like a bunch of herons wading in the swamp, but that's just part of its charm!
After shopping around upstairs for a while, I wandered down to the first floor, just to see what they had. Checked out some shoes, looked through the ancient stacks of vinyl, and waded through some clothes. I still don't know why I went to the clothing pile, I usually skip it entirely. (Who wants to buy clothes from the floor of a warehouse?) But I did, and that's when I saw it.
First a scrap of khaki, then that plaid. Ah yes, the Burberry plaid. Now normally, I wouldn't have known Burberry from burlap, except that earlier that week I had been flipping through a magazine at the dentist's office that just happened to have an indepth article on trenchcoats - history, various styles, brands, prices - pretty much anything a girl could wish to know about the trenchcoat. When I pulled this coat from the pile it all came back to me... including the pricetag. These coats retail brand new for about 0. (Edit: I just looked them up, they're priced at 85 now!) I had just found a practically new one being sold by the pound. I kept looking around, thinking someone had accidentally left it there but no one appeared, so finally I took it over to the register for the weigh-in. Final price? Three dollars and thirty cents.
And that, my friends, is the story of my best bargain ever.
Bargain Yashica FX-3 Super 2000
Image by bcostin
Slightly battered but functional Yashica FX-3 Super 2000 an upgrade of the orignal FX-3. This camera is all mechanical and mostly manual. The batteries are only used to operate the uncoupled TTL meter. It's not much to look at and it's mostly plastic. But it does have a standard Contax/Yashica lens mount, so it's popular as a backup body among users of Carl Zeiss lenses. It's also very light and compact, about the same size as the small Pentax ME K-mount bodies.
Purchased at the local antique mall for a whopping .50, along with this Konica, and it works just fine! This was a pleasant surprise. Most of the cameras I see there are overpriced old Brownies or folders, usually in non-working condition for display on someone's knick-nack shelves.
united by a love of bargain shoe shopping

Northern Logan Square and southern Avondale is pretty much where a large Mexican population and a large Polish population meet in Chicago (though there are many such neighborhoods). This photo was taken on and of such an intersection of cultures (on Milwaukee Avenue just south of Belmont) as these two older women shoe shop at one of the bargain stores (trilingual) that line the stretch.
